The Impact of Team Bootlegging Innovation on Team Breakthrough Creativity and Its Boundary Conditions

团队越轨创新对团队突破性创造力的影响效应及其边界条件

Abstract: Bootlegging innovation, as an innovative approach that allows teams to break traditional frameworks, provides a powerful means for enterprises to overcome the “innovator's dilemma”. It is a key strategy for achieving disruptive innovation and leading industry transformation. This study explores how team bootlegging innovation can drive breakthrough creativity within teams, integrating insights from resource bricolage theory to dynamic capabilities theory. The research model was validated by using survey data from 209 samples collected through a two-stage enterprise questionnaire. The findings demonstrate that team bootlegging innovation has a positive impact on team breakthrough creativity. This suggests that when teams engage in bootlegging activities, they are more likely to generate innovative and groundbreaking ideas. Additionally, the study reveals that team boundary-spanning search acts as a positive moderator in the relationship between team bootlegging innovation and team breakthrough creativity. Specifically, when teams engage in more extensive boundary-spanning searches, the positive effect of bootlegging innovation on breakthrough creativity is amplified. Furthermore, the study highlights the role of team ambidexterity capacity in enhancing the positive relationship between team bootlegging innovation and team breakthrough creativity. Teams with higher ambidexterity capacity are better equipped to leverage bootlegging innovation to drive breakthrough creativity. This capacity allows teams to balance exploration and exploitation effectively, thereby maximizing the benefits of bootlegging activities. Interestingly, the research also shows that team boundary-spanning search mediates the moderating effect of team ambidexterity capacity on the relationship between team bootlegging innovation and team breakthrough creativity. This indicates that the effectiveness of ambidexterity capacity in enhancing the impact of bootlegging innovation is partially dependent on the extent of boundary-spanning search activities. Overall, these findings underscore the importance of fostering a culture that supports bootlegging innovation, boundary-spanning search, and ambidexterity within teams. By doing so, organizations can enhance their ability to generate breakthrough creativity and maintain a competitive edge in rapidly evolving markets.

摘要: 越轨创新作为一种突破传统框架的创新方式,为企业破解“创新者的窘境”提供了有效途径,是实现颠覆性创新、引领行业变革的关键策略。整合资源拼凑理论和动态能力理论,本文深入探讨团队越轨创新推动团队突破性创造力的发生机制,并利用209份两阶段企业问卷调查数据对研究模型进行检验。结果表明,团队越轨创新可以激发团队突破性创造力;团队跨界搜索促进团队越轨创新向团队突破性创造力转换;当团队具有高水平的双元能力时,团队越轨创新活动更容易转化为团队突破性创造力;团队双元能力可以通过促进团队跨界搜索来提升团队越轨创新与团队突破性创造力之间的正向关系。研究结论不仅拓展了团队越轨创新研究的深度与广度,而且对现代企业如何突破有限资源的限制和约束,实现颠覆性创新以获得持续竞争优势提供了重要启示。
