Abstract: This article employs a difference-in-differences model based on the implementation of the Supply Chain Innovation and Application Pilot Policy to, for the first time, quantitatively assess the impact of smart supply chain development on firms’ labor income share from the perspective of external digitalization. The empirical results reveal that the construction of smart supply chains significantly reduces the labor income share within firms. This effect is more pronounced among non-state-owned enterprises, labor-intensive firms, upstream enterprises, firms with higher levels of internal control, and those with weaker supply chain linkages. Mechanism analysis indicates that the negative impact primarily operates through two channels: the information effect and the technology substitution effect. Further investigation suggests that smart supply chain development alleviates excessive labor investment by reducing firms’ demand for redundant labor, thereby enhancing labor investment efficiency. The findings of this study offer novel theoretical insights and empirical evidence for the modernization of supply chains and the optimization of income distribution structures.
