Abstract: The research on how to take advantage of the opportunity of accelerating the return of overseas talents to promote the quality upgrading of China's imported products is of great significance for the coordinated promotion of talent power and trade power strategy under the new open economy system in China. Based on the matching data of Chinese A-share listed companies and the Chinese customs database, this paper examines the impact of CEOs' overseas experiences on the quality of imported products. The study finds that CEOs' overseas experiences play a significant and robust role in promoting the quality of imported products. The test of influence mechanism shows that reducing transaction costs and promoting technological progress are important channels by which CEOs' overseas experiences improve the quality of imported products. Further heterogeneity analysis shows that for capital goods, differentiated products, state-owned enterprises, large enterprises, and those newly entering the import market, CEOs' overseas experiences have a stronger promoting effect on the quality of imported products. This paper earlier confirms the positive impact of CEOs' overseas experiences on the quality upgrading of imported products, and provides new empirical support for the effective practice of the market-oriented “talent recruitment” pattern in China.

Key words: CEO Overseas Experience, Imported Product Quality, Transaction Cost, Technological Progress
