Abstract: It is our shared aspiration to enable the elderly to enjoy a happy life in their later years, which is also an inherent requirement for high-quality population development and Chinese-style modernization. With the elderly population accounting for nearly one-fifth of the total population, how to safeguard their happy lives in their later years has become a critical and practical issue that China, which is entering an aging society, needs to study urgently. Based on the micro-survey data in 2018 from CHARLS(China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study), this research is conducted centering on the connotation of the “Six Aspects of Elderly Well-being”(support, medical care, contribution, learning, education, and recreation for the elderly). The results indicate that the improvement of the livability of the built environment exerts a significant positive impact on the subjective evaluation of elderly residents' well-being. There are two underlying mechanisms: first, a livable built environment significantly enhances the social participation of elderly residents; second, the improved livability of the built environment significantly increases their re-employment opportunities, thereby strengthening the income support for their happy life. The findings of this study have guiding significance to realizing the social vision of the “Six Aspects of Elderly Well-being” in the new era, namely, from the perspective of continuously improving the livability of the built environment, striving to provide more public services and public facility support for elderly residents to integrate into society, giving full play to the role of social elderly care, reducing the prevalence of living alone in old age, and endeavoring to create conditions and opportunities for elderly residents to obtain economic support.
