Abstract:

Based on the framework of Global Value Chains(GVCs) specialization, with China's manufacturing industry as the research object, this paper uses the data of WIOD and TIVA in the years of 1995~2009 to analyze the impact of Global value chains specialization on the relative wages of high-skilled labor. The results show that the participation in Global Value Chains has raised the relative wages of high-skilled labor in China's manufacturing industry as a whole. Trade, especially the increase of exports, has played a most significant role in promoting the increase of the relative wages of high-skilled labor. In contrast, the increase of servicification of manufacturing industry has had an opposite effect. Especially, the intermediate service input from domestic service industry has reduced the relative wages of high-skilled labor more prominently.

Key words: Global Value Chains Specialization, Manufacturing Industry, Relative Wages of High-skilled Labor, Servicification of Manufacturing Industry
