Abstract: At present, with the development of the gig economy, gig workers have become an important part of China's labor market. Gig platforms control and manage the work behaviors of gig workers through algorithms. Drawing on agency theory, this study explores the internal mechanism of how algorithmic control affects gig workers' algorithmic resistance behavior by introducing perceived dehumanization as a mediator and algorithmic transparency as a moderator. This study conducted two studies to test the hypotheses. Study 1 was a scenario experimental study, which obtained 183 valid responses. Study 2 was a survey study, which obtained 234 valid responses. We found that: (1) algorithmic control is positively related to perceived dehumanization; (2) perceived dehumanization is positively related to algorithmic resistance behavior; (3) algorithmic transparency moderates the effect of algorithmic control on perceived dehumanization and the indirect effect of algorithmic control on algorithmic resistance behavior through perceived dehumanization, whereby these two effects are weaker when algorithmic transparency is high. This study advances the field of research on the effects of algorithmic control and expands the application boundary of agency theory. In addition, this study provides practical insights for gig platforms to manage the work behaviors of gig workers.
