Abstract: Based on the data from Chinese listed companies between 2012 and 2023, this paper systematically examines the impact and underlying mechanisms of the construction of the national unified market on firms supply chain configuration. The results show that the national unified market significantly improves supply chain configuration. Mechanism analysis reveals that this effect operates through two channels: On the extensive margin, it enhances the division of labor and broadens supply demand linkages, while on the intensive margin, it improves transaction modes and optimizes supply demand matching. Heterogeneity analysis further indicates that the positive impact of the national unified market on supply chain optimization is more pronounced for firms located in regions with poorer market environment, for enterprises with higher risk perception, and in industries with more intense competition. Extension analysis shows that the national unified goods market interacts synergistically with the unified capital market. This paper not only confirms how the construction of the national unified market enhances supply chain configuration, but also reveals its critical role in helping firms to cope with external uncertainties and shocks, and in strengthening their bargaining power.
