The Promotion Effect of Industrial Internet on Corporate Collaborative Innovation of Manufacturing Enterprises: Quasi-natural Experiment Based on the Industrial Internet Pilot Demonstration Project

摘要: 本文基于2013—2021年中国制造业上市公司数据,以“工业互联网试点示范项目”政策为准自然试验,利用倾向得分匹配-多期双重差分法检验工业互联网对企业协同创新的影响。研究发现,工业互联网通过提高企业外部沟通效率和内部管理效率促进企业协同创新,表现为“示范项目”政策显著增加入选企业的联合专利申请量;工业互联网对企业协同创新的促进作用受到城市互联网发展水平、行业技术水平、企业所有制类型和协同创新主体等因素的影响;“策略性专利行为”导致“示范项目”政策下联合实用新型专利的申请量激增,但其被引用的次数减少,降低了企业协同创新的“质量”。

Abstract: At present, a relatively complete industrial system has been established in Chinese manufacturing industry, but traditional industries that mainly focus on processing and assembly need urgent transformation. The problem of low innovation ability should be addressed immediately. With the increasingly complex technological structure, corporate innovation not only requires more knowledge reserves, but also faces higher risks. Corporate collaborative innovation enables manufacturing enterprises to fully integrate external resources, diversify R&D risks and reduce transaction costs, ensuring the smooth progress of enterprise innovation activities. In recent years, with the gradual integration of internet technology and traditional manufacturing industry, the industrial internet has provided an effective path for corporate collaborative innovation in China. The industrial internet is an innovative manufacturing model based on internet technology, which is integrated into the traditional manufacturing industry with the help of a new generation of internet technology to closely connect the elements of factories, equipments, products, suppliers and users and efficiently share all kinds of elemental resources in the product life cycle. . In 2015, the State Council for the first time put forward the concept of "industrial Internet" and raised it to the height of national strategy, focusing on promoting enterprise collaborative innovation through the industrial Internet. With the support of policies, the scale of industrial internet in China has grown significantly, but there are still some problems such as the lack of core technology and imperfect developmental ecology, which may weaken the effect of industrial internet on corporate collaborative innovation. Can the industrial internet really promote the corporate collaborative innovation? What is the underlying mechanism? The discussion of the above issues is particularly important, considering the urgent need to achieve the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry. Based on the data of Chinese listed manufacturing companies from 2013 to 2021, this paper tests the effect of industrial internet on corporate collaborative innovation empirically by treating “industrial internet pilot demonstration project” policy as quasi-natural experiment. Firstly, in order to alleviate the endogeneity, the radius matching method of propensity score matching is used to process all samples and the matching radius is set to be 0. 001. Secondly, the differences-in-differences method is used to evaluate the impact of industrial internet on corporate collaborative innovation. Thirdly, in order to ensure the reliability of the conclusion, the parallel trend test, balancing test and robust test are implemented. Next, in order to analyze the underlying mechanism of industrial internet on corporate collaborative innovation, the mediation effect model is used to recognize the mediation effect of corporate external communication efficiency and internal management efficiency. Then, in order to analyze the heterogeneous impact of industrial internet on corporate collaborative innovation, heterogeneity analysis is used to discuss the impact of industrial internet with different urban internet development level, industrial technical level, enterprise ownership type and collaborative innovation entity. Finally, in order to analyze the influence of industrial internet policy on the quality of corporate collaborative innovation, triple differences method is used to evaluate the impact of the “demonstration project” policy on the citation frequency of joint patent. The conclusions are as follows: (1)Industrial internet can promote corporate collaborative innovation by improving corporate external communication efficiency and internal management efficiency, which is manifested in the increase of the application quantity of joint patent with the “demonstration project” policy; (2)The promotion effect of industrial internet on corporate collaborative innovation is influenced by urban internet development level, industrial technical level, enterprise ownership type and collaborative innovation entity; (3) “Strategic patenting” may result in a surge in the number of joint utility model patents filed under the “Demonstration Project” policy, but the number of citations decreases, which reduces the “quality” of corporate collaborative innovation. This paper provides policy recommendations to improve industrial internet construction and promote corporate collaborative innovation.
